Back-to-Back Historic Preservation Award Winner!

We are delighted to announce that Francis C. Klein & Associates, Architects, has been honored with a 2020 Montclair Historic Preservation Award for its restoration of the Paper Plane Coffee Company storefront and interior. It’s the second year in a row that FKA has received this honor. In presenting the award, project planner Graham Petto commended us for our creative “interpretation of architectural features” and thoughtful “adaptive reuse” of the “historic structure.”

We worked in conjunction with Jonathan Echeverry, owner of Paper Plane, and Ed Lamson, General Contractor, in order to update the well-worn antique store previously housed at 194 Claremont Ave. Our goal was to honor the unique history of the building while reimagining it as a contemporary meeting place for the Montclair community. Paper Plane itself represents the culmination of the knowledge and experience of five generations of coffee growers. Our design carries that rich history into the present.
